What is there to celebrate about Southeast Washington,DC?
It’s the people.
The Strivers. Believers. Activists and Administrators. The preachers, teachers and non profits who give us hope.The small business people who make what we love and feed us.
Southeast DC is worthy of celebration because of the many parents who are doing what is right. Those diligent mothers walking their kids to school along Penn Ave and those protective dads who kiss their daughters before putting in their hours at work. We celebrate the children who make us smile and the wisdom of many, many grandparents who remember what it was like back in the day.They do the hard work, because they believe it too.
And that work doesn’t make the news.
I love the annual festivals that bring us together. The GoGo pocket that burns in our heart and moves our feet. From the stately all brick homes in Hillcrest and Penn Branch to the culturally rich arts hub in Congress Heights. Those who live here share a deep connection.
We love our art galleries, our bookstore and the Anacostia Community Museum. We love our aspiring small neighborhood restaurants where everyone truly knows your name.
Southeast DC is not perfect.There’s certainly way too much of the wrong things.
However, I’m not waiting on Christopher Columbus and his crew of greedy developers to ‘discover’ our many miles of the hiking trails along the Ft. Circle Parks–or the amazing views of the Anacostia River when you walk the J. Phillip Sousa Bridge on a beautiful day.
I was not pushed here. There’s no other part of this city that I want to live in.This is where my family, and my business, received the warmest embrace in my 20 years as a DC resident.
The seeds you plant determine the type of fields you grow. This is how I choose to give that love back.
